Apryl went back to school early in my old place of employment here in Costa Rica. We got up early to meet the school bus at Gabby's house (7am pickup). By the time the bus got there to pick her up, her nerves started to grow, but with a smile and confidence she boarded the bus, waved goodbye to me and was off! I followed by boarding the local city bus to the little town, which took about 30 minutes and arrived an hour after her school day began.
The school had undergone many changes, but was still recognizable and familiar to me! No one worked there that had when I had been the director. I visited with the secretary for a short time and then got a tour. The main area was unchanged, but the back now had two stories, the kitchen was no longer in the same spot and the football field is now covered. Where the playground existed and the lot besides the school was now a synthetic futbol field and newly constructed playground and beautiful kitchen and eating area. The kitchen was also a "pulperia" where kids could purchase snacks and drinks! After my tour I went to Apryl's classroom and looked in the room. She was working hard and didn't see me until a boy in the back of the room yelled "Apryl, tu mama es aqui" - "Apryl, your mom is here"! She came out side the room with a huge smile and was so happy! She told me she didn't understand a thing, but was working and happy! I had bought her a uniform and had her change so she matched the others and that made her very happy. She wanted to stay and informed me she wanted to come every day!
I returned home happy knowing she would be having a good time, and would be coming home exhausted. She did in fact come home very happy, making friends and looking forward to her next day!
Can't wait to hear about her experiences today!
